Book Blurb:
Back in the Bronze Age, Angus McCraggan sacrificed his life to break the Celtic curse laid on his kind. He failed. Millennia later, he returns to modern Ireland to find his people have become feral, vengeful shadows. With his hollow hill now packed with tourists, he uses his power to keep his past hidden.
Until an American calls him out.
Since a banshee attacked her as a teen, Erin De Santos has been tormented by dreams of a boy she’s never met. Armed with a new identity, she returns to the Emerald Isle determined to face her nightmare. But her discovery turns fatal.
When the banshee strikes again, Angus surrenders his heart—and his hope of freeing his people—to save her. With his life now hers and his curse descending, Erin must make a terrible choice: kill her savior or share his doom.
Book Excerpt:
“And what did you get up to today while I was checking on the cows?” he asked.
Out of habit, she opened her mouth to lie. But Granddad didn’t share Mom’s prejudices. He had his own. And Maureen, unlike Liz, was a truthful girl.
“I got used to driving on the wrong side of the road and around traffic circles. Then I played tourist and checked out the local sights.”
“Were you after going to the Caves?” The censure in his voice was strong.
“Caves? What caves?”
“Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. The hollow hills where Those People live.”
“Yeah, I did. Just like all the other tourists. Newgrange was booked until late so, I hit Knowth first. It’s nothing like when I was a kid.” She pushed his cup of tea into his hands, as if pressing him to own how any insanity in their family began with him. When he sipped and said nothing, she risked looking as foolish in private as she had earlier in public. “Breda didn’t show.”
He grunted. “Our Lady rarely does these days.”
Huh. Then Breda had showed in the past. Erin’s memory of meeting her might be real.
“Then I hung out at the Visitor Center until the last tour of the day to Newgrange. I was lucky to get a place. I think the staff took pity on me.”
The draw to see the site had been as great as her trepidation. She hadn’t understood why until seeing Angus. Her heart squeezed at the bone-deep sense she knew him—had known him.
Granddad regarded her from under lowered brows. “Who took your tour?”
“Some guy who called himself Angus.” Some guy who looks like a rock star and broods like a war veteran. “He’s the Angus, isn’t he? I wasn’t sure at first. When I asked him straight if he was Óenghus Óg, he said that wasn’t his name now. He also said he didn’t lie.”
She rolled her eyes at the falsehood then grabbed a fork to mash the potato.
“Both are true enough. I made it a condition of him moving into my property: I’d house an honest man or none. He’s not said a word of a lie since.” Granddad scrunched his nose like he’d smelled something nasty. “Little did I know how Himself would turn that to his advantage. It’s slyness and cunning on his part that everyone hears what they want to hear, whatever he actually says.”
“Wait. You house him? Doesn’t he live at Newgrange, the same as Breda lives at Knowth?”
“Angus is…unique…in being human again, the only one of his kind who lives and ages as we do. He couldn’t stay at Newgrange. The best he can do is work there.”
She stared into the creamy clouds of potato streaked with sun-bright butter, thinking of the beautiful boy from her dreams. Human again. So that’s why he bleeds. Why he’s older.
